Dental Cleaning is a professional cleaning you receive from a dentist or dental hygienist. Most dental cleanings take between 45 minutes to an hour. Cleanings should be performed every six months to prevent excessive plaque and calculus buildup. Plaque left untreated can lead to unhealthy gums and tooth decay. A routine dental cleaning should include scaling, root planing and polishing.

Scaling: This is the process of removing plaque and calculus from all tooth surfaces. Methods vary depending on the amount of plaque and calculus.

Dental hygienists traditionally perform scaling by hand. However, new and advanced technology has led to more modern methods such as electric scalers. This sophisticated technology allows dental cleanings to be performed more efficiently and in less time. To achieve best results, both electric and manual scaling methods are combined.

In addition, measurements are taken of the gum pockets (the junction between the gum and the tooth). This gives us an indication of the gum health and if gum disease (periodontal disease) is present.

Oral cancer is on the rise for patients age 16 and older. As part of total oral care, we perform a visual oral cancer exam at every cleaning and an ora scopic exam annually. As seen on Dr. Oz, the ora scopic device is the best and latest technology used in identifying potential cancerous lesions in the mouth. We are pleased to provide this service to our patients for a nominal fee.

Sealants are used to fill in narrow grooves in a tooth that cannot be adequately cleaned by brushing. In some cases, the tooth structure has fine grooves or pits that accumulate plaque, not because the person doesn’t brush, but because they’re too narrow to allow even one bristle into them. These will develop cavities over time, and you don’t want that. During your appointment, your dentist or hygienists will brush on a coating that seals the grooves and pits, making it possible to brush off all the plaque and keep your teeth healthy.
