TMJ treatments are medical procedures that aid in the longterm healthy function of the jaw and teeth.
TMJ stands for temporal-mandibular joint. Temporal, as in temple area of skull; mandibular as in mandible, or lower jaw; joint where the head and jaw meet. Problems in this joint may be caused by a misalignment of the teeth, trauma, or excess muscle tension.
TMJ Problems can cause:
- Trouble/soreness in opening and closing the mouth
- Clicking or popping of the jaw
- Pain in the jaw muscles
- Soreness in the area, sometimes extending to the face
After a thorough exam, it may be determined that an orthopedic appliance is needed to reposition the jaw. Once comfort is established, the patient has the choice to continue with an appliance or choose a more permanent treatment option such as crowns or orthodontic treatment. The goal is to reach the patients treatment objectives with the most cost effective and conservative TMJ treatment.
