Fluoride is not just for kids! We know that young children need fluoride to help them develop strong and healthy baby teeth and then replace those with permanent teeth. Older children and adults benefit from fluoride too!

What exactly is fluoride? It’s nature’s cavity fighter! A natural mineral, fluoride is found in a variety of food and beverages, including water. Fluoride occurs naturally in many water sources, such as rivers and oceans, but is often also added to tap water as way to help increase the natural fluoride level up to the recommended level that helps prevent cavities.

Fluoride is also added to toothpaste and mouthwash as a way to further help fight cavities. Tooth enamel can weaken as we age and, of course, if we don’t take good care of our teeth we can develop cavities. Added fluoride in drinking water and dental products is a way to rebuild that enamel and reverse the early signs of tooth decay.

In young children who are just developing their teeth, fluoride can actually protect those teeth even before they break through the gums. Fluoride makes the enamel stronger right from the beginning, so children can better resist tooth decay as they grow older.

Of course, like most things that are good for you, you need to be careful not to have too much fluoride. Children should only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste when brushing their teeth because they are more likely to swallow it than to spit it out!

To get the fluoride you and your family need for the win for your healthy teeth, drink fluoridated water. You need to drink lots of water for great dental health, anyway, and if your tap water contains fluoride, all the better. Brush twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste. Be sure to check for the ADA Seal of Acceptance to make sure it contains fluoride.
