GETTING TO THE ROOT OF ROOT CANALS

GETTING TO THE ROOT OF ROOT CANALS

At Johns Dentistry, we understand that many of our patients are nervous when they come to visit us. Have no fear! We are here to help you maintain good dental health, but sometimes issues do come up with certain teeth that require treatment to make them better.

When we explain a need for a root canal treatment, we often see our patients tense up in worry. No need! Root canals are designed to help you, to save your teeth, and to give you something to smile about again!

A root canal treatment is often necessary because a cavity has reached all the way down to the pulp of a tooth. The nerve may then become damaged and the pulp will probably become infected. Surprisingly, the patient may not even know that such damage has occurred. More often, though, the infection causes a lot of pain that can be relieved with proper treatment.

When the pulp becomes infected, it will not heal on its own. In fact, infected pulp can actually weaken a person’s entire immune system, which can become extremely dangerous to a patient’s overall health. Symptoms that the pulp has become infected may include sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweets, as well as pain, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth.

A root canal treatment is performed to clean out the infected tooth pulp and disinfect the canals of the tooth. Once the infection is resolved, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any further infection. After root canal therapy is complete, we then usually recommend a core build-up and crown for restoring the tooth.

At Johns Dentistry, we do all we can to make our patients comfortable throughout this procedure. Our goal is to alleviate your anxiety as well as your pain, so you can continue to have good dental health!
