Brushing and flossing your teeth daily is considered a standard oral hygiene routine, but why do we do it? While focusing on having a whiter and brighter smile is one of the most noticeable benefits, it’s easy to overlook your gum health.
Nearly 1 in 2 adults over 30 in the United States are affected by advanced gum disease, which can lead to the loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth. Gum disease is usually painless but it is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. The mouth is the gateway to the body and can be a reflection of total body health. Gum disease is linked to increased risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other significant health concerns.
To keep your teeth supported follow our five tips for healthy gums for a healthy smile and be sure to discuss dental care with your dentist.
1. Floss at least 1-2 times per day. Brushing only removes surface level particles, leaving behind food remnants and bacteria that can get trapped between your teeth and gums, leading to cavities, gingivitis, and discomfort.
2. Exercise regularly to reduce stress and inflammation. Stress can wreak havoc on the body, and gums are no exception. Exercise regularly for release of inflammation-busting hormones.
3. Eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits and veggies. Healthy, non-sticky foods that require more chewing – such as apples, leafy greens and carrots – help stimulate saliva and clean the mouth.
4. Keep a toothbrush, toothpaste and flossers at your desk to clean your teeth and gums after lunch or your morning beverage.
5. Schedule regular checkups with your dentist and hygienist. Not only do dentists check for gingivitis and cavities, but they also screen for signs of oral cancers.
